SMF/VRLA Batteries
VRLA (Valve Regulated Lead Acid) or SMF (Sealed Maintenance Free) batteries do not require periodic topping-up of water. Because these batteries are completely sealed, these are spill proof and normally do not emit any harmful fumes or gases. VRLA/ SMF batteries are best suitable for applications where back-up requirement is usually short. The most common application of VRLA/SMF batteries is in Online UPS and are therefore referred to as UPS batteries. VRLA/ SMF batteries are generally categorised in 2 types i.e. Gell Batteries and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries.
In Gell Batteries, the electrolyte inside the battery is turned into a thick putty-like gel by the addition of silica and other gelling agents. In AGM Batteries the electrolyte in the cell is locked in fiberglass mat placed between the plates.
